🍂 Fall Sensory Play for Toddlers: 10 Easy Activities to Try at Home

Fall is full of colors, textures, sounds, and little moments that are perfect for toddler play. You don’t need a complicated craft setup or a long list of supplies to create a fun sensory experience at home. Sometimes, a bin, a few household items, and a little imagination are all you need!

We’ve put together 10 easy fall sensory play ideas you can try with your toddler this season. They’re simple to set up, fun to explore, and great for encouraging hands-on play.

1. Pumpkin Scoop & Pour

Fill a sensory bin with small, child-safe items in fall colors and add cups, scoops, and containers. Let your toddler scoop, pour, transfer, and explore.

What they’re practicing: Hand-eye coordination, pouring, and early problem-solving.

2. Fall-Colored Rice Bin

Make a simple sensory bin using dry rice in fall colors like orange, yellow, brown, and red. Add scoops, cups, and small containers for your little one to dig, fill, and dump.

Tip: Always supervise sensory play and choose materials appropriate for your child's age.

3. Leaf Sorting

Take a walk outside and collect a variety of leaves. Place them on a table or in a bin and let your toddler sort them by color, size, or shape.

You can even turn it into a simple nature scavenger hunt!

4. Apple Washing Station

Fill a shallow bin with water and add a few apples. Give your toddler a small brush, sponge, or cloth and let them “wash” the apples.

It's surprisingly entertaining—and a great opportunity for water play!

5. Pinecone Exploration

Gather a few pinecones and let your toddler explore their different textures and shapes. Add cups, bowls, or a small basket and encourage them to collect, move, and sort the pinecones.

6. Pumpkin Playdough

Bring fall into your playdough setup! Use orange playdough and add child-safe tools, leaves, or other seasonal objects for decorating and creating.

Playdough is a wonderful open-ended activity because there isn't a “right” way to play.

7. Cinnamon-Scented Sensory Bin

Create a cozy fall sensory experience with materials like dry oats or rice and a small amount of cinnamon for scent. Add scoops, cups, and other tools for exploring.

Tip: Be mindful of allergies and sensitivities, and avoid scented materials if they aren't appropriate for your child.

8. Leaf Painting

Place a few leaves on paper and let your toddler paint them with washable, child-friendly paint. Try different colors and see what happens when you layer them together.

It's messy, creative, and perfect for a fall afternoon.

9. “Find the Acorns”

Hide larger, age-appropriate objects in a sensory bin and encourage your toddler to find them. They can scoop, dig, search, and place their discoveries into a separate container.

For younger toddlers, use larger objects that cannot be swallowed and supervise closely.

10. Fall Nature Collage

Gather leaves, grass, flowers, and other natural treasures from your yard or a walk. Give your toddler paper and washable glue and let them create their own fall collage.

Don't worry about the finished product—the fun is in exploring and creating!
